Austria Submits 1st NGO Report to GREVIO

The Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) has just begun its first monitoring period for the implementation of the Istanbul Convention by states. The monitoring period includes a questionnaire which states are to respond to within a certain period of time. Non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations working in the field of combating violence against women are also invited to submit information on the implementation of the Convention on the basis of this questionnaire.

WAVE Comments on CEDAW Recommendation No. 19

The WAVE Network very much welcomes the initiative of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) to update the General Recommendations No. 19 on violence against women. A call for submissions was released in August 2016. On 30 September 2016, the WAVE office submitted comments on the draft update of general recommendations No. 19 (1992) on gender-based violence against women. WAVE very much welcomes the engagement of CEDAW to accelerate the elimination of violence against women, believing that the draft recommendations should provide concrete guidance on policies and measures needed to prevent violence against women, such as: the call for a 24/7 helpline; the definition of rape should not be based on the use of force but the absence of consent; and the problem of mandatory dispute resolution in cases of gender-based violence.

WAVE Comments to UN Call

WAVE recently commented on the Call for Submission to all Stakeholders on gaps in incorporating and implementing international and regional standards on violence against women. The comments were submitted in Vienna on 1 October 2016. WAVE welcomes the initiative of the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women to publish a call for submissions on these issues. We see the gaps as a sign of grave concern, particularly the huge scale of various forms of violence women and girls still experience in all regions of the world.
