18 May 2017 – 13:00-14:00 (CET) Tough times: Alternative sustainability strategies

Conservative, right-wing governments reason that women's organisations are threats to families and therefore refuse to fund them when actually the opposite is true. The most prominent movements of the past century (such as efforts to end child labour, or redefine the role of women in political life) have won by taking unpopular issues and changing the boundaries of the politically acceptable, so that advances which previously seemed impossible were made inevitable. If there is a common trait in them, it is that they found a way to create possibilities that had not previously existed. As the pillars give way, barriers long seen as too daunting to be overcome suddenly appear surmountable (M & P Engler). Katarina Višnar, Step Up! Campaign Coordinator, will be looking into some useful details of these events during this webinar.

1 June 2017 – 13:00-14:00 (CET)  Advocating for a European Women’s Helpline

In many regions in the EU and in Europe in general, specialist women’s support services are wholly lacking. Where women’s support services do exist, they often do not have the resources to make their services widely known, so that women are not often aware of the existence of such services. (FRA 2014b:11) Only 15 out of 46 European countries (33%) provide a 24/7 helpline free of charge. Only 9 of the EU 28 Member States provide such a helpline. (WAVE 2016) Join Lina Piskernik, Step-Up! Campaign Assistant, for her webinar on June 1st, 2017 to learn why an EU-wide Women’s Helpline could assist women’s organisations and can be used as a powerful lobbying tool.

5 July 2017 – 13:00-14:00 (CET)  Preventing and Tackling Femicide

This webinar, led by Andrada Filip, WAVE Project Coordinator, will introduce some key definitions on femicide, including the various categories that exist, drawing on scholarly research but also the reports published by the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against women, its causes and consequences. Key legal instruments addressing such crimes will be discussed. Existing data on femicide at the European and global level will be introduced, as well as some best practices for data collection developed by members of the WAVE network. Last but not least, recommendations on preventing, monitoring and prosecuting such crimes are also going to be presented.
