WAVE Statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Violence against women and girls is a severe and persistent human rights violation across all EU Member States, which has been greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The EU must make every effort to prevent and combat this problem by strengthening existing legal instruments and acceding to the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women against women and domestic violence (the Istanbul Convention).

With regard to the draft European Directive on violence against women and domestic violence, WAVE urges the European Commission to adopt a strong, committed, and holistic Directive, enshrining robust standards in the area of prevention, protection and prosecution of male violence against women and girls. WAVE expects such standards to be harmonised with the ones enshrined in the Istanbul Convention, to ensure an effective and holistic response to the millions of women and their children who are victims of violence against women and domestic violence.
